Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 9-inch angel food cake, cut into bite-size cubes (about 7 cups), divided Freshly made is best, but store-bought works beautifully too.
  • 1 1/4 cups orange curd, storebought or homemade, divided Try making your own orange curd for improved flavor!
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream Choose a high-fat content cream for the richest texture.
  • 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar Regular granulated sugar can be used, but will result in less sweet and slightly grainy whipped cream.
  • to taste optional mint, for garnish
  • to taste optional orange slices, for garnish

Method

Preparation
  1. To the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, add 2 cups of heavy cream. Mix at the lowest speed, gradually increasing to medium until thickened, about 2-3 minutes.
  2. Reduce speed to low and slowly add 1/2 cup of confectioners' sugar. Once combined, gradually increase the speed to medium, then high.
  3. Continue mixing on high until the cream thickens and soft peaks form, approximately another 2-4 minutes.
Layering
  1. In a large trifle bowl, begin layering by adding 1/3 of the angel food cake cubes, followed by 1/3 of the whipped cream mixture, and then half of the orange curd. Repeat this process one more time.
  2. Finish with the last 1/3 of cake and top with the remaining whipped cream.
Chilling
  1. You can serve immediately, or cover and refrigerate for a few hours to allow the flavors to meld beautifully.
