Ingredients

Bagel Dough Ingredients
  • 1.75 cups all-purpose flour Use unbleached flour for better flavor. For gluten-free, consider a 1:1 gluten-free blend.
  • 3 tsp baking powder This is what gives the bagels their wonderful rise.
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt Full-fat yogurt for creaminess is recommended, but low-fat works too.
  • 1/4 tsp salt Enhances the overall taste.
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar Adds a touch of sweetness to balance flavors.
  • 1 each egg Beaten, to brush on top for a beautiful golden crust.
  • to taste Everything Bagel seasoning Can be found at most grocery stores or made with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried garlic, onion, and salt.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Sift together the flour and baking powder in a small bowl.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, mix the sifted flour mixture with Greek yogurt, salt, and sugar until a shaggy dough forms. Avoid overmixing.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 2-3 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Divide the dough into 4 equal portions and shape into balls. Poke a hole through the center of each ball and stretch the hole to about an inch in diameter.
  6. Brush each bagel with beaten egg and sprinkle Everything Bagel seasoning on top.
Baking
  1. Bake the bagels for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and they sound hollow when tapped.
  2. Allow them to cool on the baking sheet for about 10-15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

For the best results, ensure your yogurt is at room temperature. Store bagels in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days or freeze for up to 1 month. To reheat, toast or warm in the oven.
